LAS BARCAS..LEGENDARY MEXICAN FOOD IN HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA

True, Southern California is full of Mexican restaurants. But when Alberto and Carmen Denenberg moved their family from Buenos Aires to Huntington Beach, they desired to establish a new food culture: gourmet Mexican, a fusion born from their Argentine blood and their adopted home in Surf City. Using their experience in various ethnic restaurants, Las Barcas opened in 1987, and was named after the fleets of sailboats that cruise off the shores of Huntington Beach. As the original chefs, they cultivated recipes that emphasized their passion for fresh, unfettered food. By listening to their customers and to their own fine tastes, they created their legendary menu, from perfectly seasoned carnitas to monstrous 1lb burritos.

This love of great food was a family tradition, which Alberto and Carmen shared with their three children. After school, Steve, Jacqui, and Antonio, worked with their parents, taking orders and serving customers. It is a tradition that continues today, as Antonio calls out orders while Alberto supervises a line of chefs. Still in its landmark original location—though much larger now—the Denenbergs have developed a cult following. Daily they welcome friends and extended familia, who sail in from all over the world, drawn to Las Barcas for its taste of “Year-Round Summer.”

Good Restaraunt I live close by and eat there at least twice a month. I have had the fish taco's, fried taco's, soft taco's, flautas, taquitos! Every thing i have had has been really good. Everything is cooked fresh so call ahead if you want to pick it up otherwise expect to be there 15-20 minutes waiting on food and that's if they are not busy.... Very good place to eat

DISNEYS WIZARD OF OZ TO FILM IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

It looks as if "Oz: The Great and Powerful," Disney's "Wizard of Oz" prequel to be directed by Sam Raimi and likely starring Johnny Depp, will be filming in southeast Michigan.

The Detroit Free Press did the math, reporting that an application to the Michigan Film Office stated that a Hollywood production budgeted at $105 million was approved for a $40 million tax credit. No title for the film was given, but the production company was dubbed Emerald City Productions - a reference to "The Wizard of Oz" and a Disney-affiliated company.

The movie will likely land at Raleigh Studios in Pontiac.

Raimi, who directed the "Spider-Man" films and cult favorite "The Evil Dead," is a native of the Detroit area. Depp reportedly has been negotiating to star in the project after Robert Downey Jr. dropped out.

BRIAN URLACHER OF THE CHICAGO BEARS THINKING HE IS JESSE OWENS BUT REALIZED HE IS A RHINO

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTgVXeZc2Ww

Brian Urlacher thought he was Jesse owens and though he runs the 100 yard dash in 13 seconds,,why didnt the lug hand off to the his cornerback right in back of him who can run a hundred in 9.6...Urlacher tied up within ten yards and a feather would have knocked him down,,,that would have changed the game if he didnt want to get the glory.

ROGER BAUM-Frank Baum's great-grandson continues writing adventures of Dorothy and friends

Like many children, Roger Baum would saddle up to his parents on the couch as they read him "The Wizard of Oz."

But unlike many children, little Roger Baum was listening to the words of his great-grandfather Frank Baum, author of the famous story.

Roger Baum, who lives in Springfield now, has penned 14 books himself and continues to write the Oz series. His first book, "Dorothy of Oz," is being made into an animated film, set to release in 2012. Some high profile actors will lend their voice to the animation: Kelsey Grammer is the Tin Man; "Glee" star Lea Michele is Dorothy; Dan Aykroyd voices the Scarecrow; Martin Short is The Jester; and Patrick Stewart voices Tugg.

The film is being produced by Summertime Entertainment.

Seated in his kitchen, Roger Baum shares tidbits about his famous great-granddad, a man he never met, but whose legacy is carried on in the family.

Before television, storytelling was a popular pastime and Frank Baum was a master storyteller.

Children in the Chicago neighborhood where he lived would gather for hours to listen to him weave an adventure out of his imagination.

As Frank Baum crafted his tale -- a land that would later make him famous -- one of the children in his audience asked what was the name of his magical place?

Baum looked up and saw the filing cabinet labeled O-Z, he came up with Oz.

"A lot of that has innocent beginnings," says Baum.

The inspiration for the Tin Man was born years before Frank Baum was an author. At that time, he was a salesman and his boss asked him to dress up the store window to attract customers.

Frank Baum fastened a metal man with a funnel head, which would later be the inspiration for the Tin Man.

The robot in Oz, Tik-Tok, was so named because Baum's grandson (Roger's dad) would sit on his lap and listen to his pocket watch and say "tick-tock, tick-tock."

Roger Baum and his wife, Charlene, named their dog Tik-Tok in his honor and they own a cairn terrier, the same breed as Toto.

Frank Baum authored 62 books in his career, under various pen names, before his death in 1919.

Despite what some scholars have theorized, Baum says there is nothing political about the Wizard of Oz.

It's purely a story "for the young at heart. Some professors have wonderful imaginations. He was strictly a storyteller. ... Love, wisdom and courage is what Oz is all about."

Roger Baum did not start off following in his great-grandfather's footsteps. He's had a slew of jobs from salesman to emergency medical technician to stockbroker.

He had dabbled in writing when one night in 1987, a friend challenged him to write an Oz book and said he would illustrate it.

"And I thought, it's a little presumptuous," he says.

Continuing the legacy of his great-grandfather is a huge responsibility and one he doesn't take lightly.

Roger has tried to stay true to Frank Baum's vision, says his wife, Charlene.

For example, in the movie version of the story, Dorothy wears ruby slippers, but in the books, Dorothy wears silver slippers.

The reason for the difference is ruby slippers look better on film, but Roger kept her silver slippers in his books.

"He stays true to the books," she says.

Not only did that first book launch his career as a writer, but it's the book that's being turned into an animation.

"The producers felt that Roger's particular books and characters made for a great entry point for the Oz franchise into animation," says Charley Waters, head of CT3PR, who is in charge of the film's marketing campaign. "They also loved the idea of keeping the project 'in the family' with the Baums' creative support."

The film has been in the works for years.

"Animated films can take up to three to four years to produce from concept to final, sometimes even more. This film is on track to follow that model," says Waters.

While it does not have a release date yet, the target is spring 2012.

This is the second time one of Roger's books has been turned into a film. His book, "Lion of Oz," was already turned into an animation with voices by Tim Curry and Dom DeLuise.

The 72-year-old continues to write, working on his second Oz Odyssey.

Chad Thomas, an artist who lives in Ozark, has illustrated one of Baum's books and is working on the Odyssey.

"He actually contacted me and asked for something and I sent him samples and he decided he liked mine the best so it went that way," says Thomas. "I didn't even know who he was (at first). He's been great."

Roger and Charlene moved to Springfield in 2006 after spending three years in the Branson area.

They came to Branson after a six-year booksigning contract with MGM Grand in Las Vegas ended.

Roger says he and his great-grandfather have a similar vision: to leave a footprint on the world through stories and subtle lessons.

"All the characters (in Wizard of Oz) had the attributes they were searching for all the time within themselves. All of us have that. We don't think we have it in us and we do," says Roger Baum.

JOHNNY DEPP TO DO PREQUELED WIZARD OF OZ

The Wizard of Oz" may be the best-known movie of all time, and here's big news that'll make you click your heels: "Wizard" is being prequeled. Here are details on the upcoming "Oz: The Great and Powerful," with Johnny Depp starring as the Wizard.

There's some down-low industry buzz that "The Wizard of Oz" is set to return to the big screen in a remake titled "Oz: The Great and Powerful." Details so far are incredibly scarce -- all we know is that Disney bought the property, it's scheduled to start filming in June of this year and slated to hit theaters in 2013...but the major development is that Johnny Depp is set to star.

That's according to a report published Thursday. Apparently, Disney has struck a deal with Johnny Depp to play the lead -- the Wizard -- in this prequel to the original "Wizard of Oz." If all this is true, Depp's part will be huge -- check out how the film is summarized on IMDb:

SKIP BAYLESS RACIST COMMENT ON ESPN

In fact, we are all human.

Only a few days after Martin Luther King Jr. day, Skip Bayless of ESPN today (January 20, 2011) stated that he was somewhat proud of Blake Griffin of the Los Angles Clippers because his mother is white and that he needs a white American NBA player to be proud of since Bayless calls himself white.

Not only were his remarks inflammatory but the fact is, there is no question through his own lineage, that he is not pure white and that he had forefathers who werent white.

All Bayless needed was to wear a white sheet aka KKK with his comments yet nothing will be done by ESPN for this horrific, idiotic stance taken by Bayless.

Bayless took America back two hundred years with his racist comments that many have died for in the sense of humanity and though freedom of speech is a mainstay, inflammatory speech is not protected by our liberties and Bayless violated his right of free speech.

In fact, we are all human but Bayless with his comment showed that some are not.

TED WILLIAMS, MR. GOLDEN VOICE, STILL DRINKING

Ted Williams headed to rehab after one-on-one with Dr. Phil

January 12, 2011

Ted Williams, the homeless man with the golden voice, will enter rehab after a decision that sprung from a taping of "Dr. Phil," the show said Wednesday.

Williams, his family members and psychologist-turned-TV-host Phil McGraw discussed the YouTube sensation's physical altercation Monday with one of his daughters. Williams' admission that he was still drinking led to his decision -- after what the host called a "lengthy one-on-one conversation" -- to enter a rehab facility.

"If Ted is ever going to get better, he's got to be honest with himself and admit he's addicted to drugs and alcohol," McGraw said in a statement.

"I've told him it's not going to be easy and it's going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction."

Williams and daughter Janey were detained Monday night by police who responded to a disturbance report at the Hollywood Renaissance, but no charges were filed.

The family members were staying at the hotel ahead of their TV appearance, during which relatives declared the instant celebrity had been drinking daily. In interviews last week, Williams said he had been sober for two years after struggling with alcohol and crack cocaine addiction.

Segments of the syndicated show featuring Williams, his ex-wife Patricia and five family members, were set to air Wednesday and Thursday.
