Finally, a bit of poster art at which Captain America would exclaim, "I understood that reference!" Disney has released the second of three poster nuglets for Oz: The Great and Powerful, and the presence of, amongst other things, flying monkeys clues us in to the fact that is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
On Halloween last week, the first artwork showed off Rachel Weisz's wicked witch Evanora in a lush fantasy environment. That was the first major bit of promotion for the film since Comic-Con in July, but it looks like things are picking up, with another quasi-poster almost surely arriving about a week from now. But back to this one, which is far busier than its predecessor. In addition to the flying monkeys that make the biggest impression, there are also some giant teacups, Tony Cox as Knuck, and stuff on the landscape like a shiny castle and some foreboding peaks.
And you can see a hot-air balloon surrounding by airborne primates. That's the balloon that delivers Oscar Diggs to the land of Oz. Diggs, played by James Franco, is an illusionist and circus huckster who escapes some dire circumstances on the balloon when a tornado sends him to Oz, where he's thought to be a grand wizard of prophecy.
The art debuted at Yahoo! Movies today. Take a look:
This poster gives the impression that Oz: The Great and Powerful might swing close to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland visually, but remember, this film is directed by Sam Raimi, the man behind The Evil Dead and the Spider-Man trilogy, as well as Darkman and, most recently, Drag Me To Hell. Raimi has his own style, and with his first 3D feature, he will doubtless have some fun with the camera and induce a little vertigo in his audience.
Franco leads a cast that also features Weisz, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, Abigail Spencer, Martin Klebba, and Ted Raimi, whose comic timing was an indispensable component of the Daily Bugle scenes in Raimi'sSpider-Man films.
Oz: The Great and Powerful hits theaters on March 8, 2013, so pick up your Rogue 3D Eyewear while you still have plenty of time.
