Housed in a velvet lined, green cloth clamshell case."[Over] a century after this book’s first publication, few Americans are unfamiliar with the image of Dorothy being carried by a Kansas cyclone into the magical land of Oz, where she meets the scarecrow, the tin woodman, and the cowardly lion. Their adventures looking for the Emerald City and the wizard have become a permanent part of American popular culture. Baum’s work, originally self-published with striking illustrations by William Wallace Denslow, was an immediate success with children; its popularity now is largely based on the 1939 film, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy. In his introduction to the book, Baum argued that ‘the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as ‘historical’ the time has come for a series of newer ‘wonder tales.’ Modern education includes morality, therefore the modern child needs only entertainment in its wonder-tales. ’ The Wonderful Wizard of Oz lays claim to a place among the turning points in the secularization of American children’s literature" (The New York Public Library’s Books of the Century).Blanck, Peter Parley to Penrod, pp. 111-113. Book Description: Geo M. Hill Co, Chicago, Ilinois, 1900. Full Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. W.W. Denslow (illustrator). First Edition. 8vo. Author: L. (Lyman) Frank Baum Green, Hanff, Bibliographia Oziana pages 23-25. Jacob Blanck Peter Parley to Penrod pages 112 & 113. Large 8vo., green cloth, stamped in red and green. 261 pages. This mixed-state, mostly variant "C" First Edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been restored, & two peices of the book were missing, making exact identification difficult: the 1st page is out, so it can't be determined if the advertisement opposite the title page has the border around it. The lower right portion at the foot of the spine was also missing, so the "Co." in Geo. M. Hill Co. is also missing. However, the type is red & serifed as per Green, Hanff variant "C", Blanck state "Y". The losses to the spine have been carefully filled in to provide a perfect match to the adjacent material. Copyright page has the press-printed copyright notice. Page 14 reads ' Low Wail'. Page 81, fourth line from the bottom spells 'pieces' correctly. Page 227 first line spelled: 'While the woodman'. The colophon at the rear of the book is 13 lines, all in black. The dark-blue blots are not present on the moon on the plate facing page 34, and the red shading is not present on the plate facing page 92. All 24 color plates by W.W. Denslow are are present. The book has undergone a full restoration by : Scott K. Kellar Bookbinding and Restoration, Chicago,Illinois. The book has been expertly re sewn, reinforced and restored using archival materials (such as the spine restoration mentioned above). Scott also created an archival custom-made clamshell box with leather spine label for additional protection. I will be glad to provide additional photographs or answer any questions about this book. Book Description: Geo. M. Hill Co., Chicago and New York, 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. W.W. Denslow (illustrator). 1st Edition. A very collectible book in unfortunate condition. The good news is that both covers are present, as are all the pages and plates. However, this book looks back fondly on the days when it had a back strip and solid binding as part of its former glory which exists no more. Many of the plates are clean and attractive, but the end papers have been unprofessionally taped, the front with residue and the rear end paper still with the offending adhesive. Book Description: Ogilvie 1903-1904, Chicago, 1903. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good with no dust jacket. Illustrated by W W Denslow (illustrator). First Edition; First Printing. Chromo-lithograph; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 42 pages; There are 42pp and 24 plates full color full page plates two of which are pasted face down inside the covers with only blank backs showing as issued. The story line is printed on the backs of the plates. Hard paper wraps with red cloth spine. Red dye from spine has migrated into the edge of the binding margin. Does not infringe upon either text or illustrations. Size 8.25 x 6.5". Bienvenue & Schmidt suggest that this was produced as a give-away for audience members at the 125th performance of the theatrical version at the Majestic Theatre in 1903. Bienvenue & Schmidt p.146. Both Hanf and Bienvenue remain silent on why the two plates were pasted to the covers face down. ".First and only printing of rare pamphlet printed on original color plates for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When the George M. Hill Co. , the original publisher of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) , went bankrupt in early 1902, George W. Ogilvie purchased the firm's stock that included unused color plates for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Baum and Denslow sued to have the printing plates to all of their books returned to them as they were negotiating with The Bobbs-Merrill Co. Of Indianapolis to reissue their joint publications. They had every right to as they had paid to have them made. Pictures from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a shameless attempt to cash in on the recent smash hit musical extravaganza The Wizard of Oz. The color lithographed covers were based on publicity photographs of Fred Stone and Dave Montgomery as the Scarecrow and the Tin Man in the play. Because Ogilvie did not possess the book's actual printing plates, he merely commissioned a new story from hack writer Russell and printed it on the versos of Denslow's original color plates. This largely incomprehensible "Story telling the Adventures of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Little Girl" bears almost no resemblance to Baum's American fairy tale. It mentions neither the name "Dorothy" or the word "Oz." Unfortunately, two of the plates (the pictorial title page and the picture of Glinda the Good) were used as endpapers and pasted to the backs of the wrappers. Although Denslow's name appears on both the cover and title page of this pamphlet, he does not seem to have approved of or been personally involved in any way with its production." An interesting and scarce ephemeral production in the Wizard of Oz pantheon. Collates complete. Bookseller Inventory # 32254
