HUNTINGTON BEACH DOGS SURFING, DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

call it the Dog Days of Summer party.
Huntington Beach will celebrate its four-legged friends with a wet-and-wild bash for surfer dogs and their friends on Sunday, Sept. 19, when the second annual Surf City Surf Dog competition takes place.
The contest is part of a weekend of events that will also include a fashion show and “yappy hour,” costume contest, dog expo and a beach walk for pups and people.
Activities will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, with the “High Maintenance Bitch Fashion Show and Yappy Hour.” Proceeds benefit the Orange County Humane Society. The models — dogs available for adoption — will strut the runway at the Shorebreak Hotel wearing doggie couture from the High Maintenance Bitch pup boutique in Seattle. Info: (714) 861-4470; suggested donation, $10.
The Surf Dog competition will begin at 8:20 a.m. Sunday at the Huntington Dog Beach, with heats continuing until 11:05 a.m. ($40 entry fee on event day; $35 in advance). The finals will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Other Sunday activities at the beach will include an 8 a.m. Woofin’ Walk ($25 entry fee); a canine costume contest, 11:30 a.m. ($25 entry fee); and the “Hot Diggity Dog Expo,” 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (free), with more than 40 pet-related vendors and organizations. The beach is west of Pacific Coast Highway at Goldenwest Street. Dogs must be leashed.
